Another beautiful day...cool morning and sunny afternoon with 80 degrees. The smoke is finally gone and no rain in the forecast for all of next week. Temp. predicited to be in the low 80"s all next week. It is a little windy, but as long as we stay off the ocean the waters are calm.
As we left Charleston we passed by Fort Sumter in the harbor. ML claims it was a little rough so the picture is not up to her standards. The captain didn't hold the boat smooth!!
For the next 65 miles it was more of the same...marsh grass...the view from the captains chair never changed. We had some of the narrowest channels we've traveled so far. Add to this shoaling and low tide, and it made for an exciting day. ML ran the charts and we never missed a turn or ran aground. The first city since Charleston was Georgetown and was our stop. Georgetown is the third oldest city in South Carolina and was not destroyed during the Civil War.
Entering the harbor is like entering a port in New England...shrimp boats and an old seaport town. After we checked in we stopped at one of the shrimp boats and purchased a couple of pounds of shrimp for dinner. Better than SOB'S in Fort Myers.
Of all the ports we have visited, Georgetown is one of the best. Beautiful shopping area and large pre-civil war homes. Seems all the plantation owners had an in town house they visited during business. The wealth came from the growth of Indigo and rice. Rice being king from 1780 to the Civil War. One plantation generated over 4m.lbs of a rice a year. There were 140 rice planations and each averaged 1m. lbs per year. This all ended when slavery was outlawed. I think it would have been a great time to have lived during this era in the south.
We signed up for a tour of the city and did a little shopping. The bikes were all over town. I guess this is an overflow from Myrtle Beach. Bob and Barb should have stayed on board, they always seem to run into the bikers when they visit the area.
On to Myrtle Beach on Sunday where we plan to spend a couple of days in port.

Why go to school when The Captain is giving us real life experiences. Looks really laid back there. All is good in Ohio but Lake Erie is calling you home!!!
Great history lesson Dad! Brings me back to summer vacations to museums and stuff...at least I know I come by my geek obsession with history honestly! By the way, we had FRESH gulf coast shrimp yesterday...caught on Friday and in my tummy less than 48 hours later mm mm good!
