JUNE 22, 2007...Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

It was about a 10 minute walk to the ferry from the boat and a short ride to Ellis Island for our first stop. We attended a live performance of how the crossing might have been in 1920 and the metal and physical strain of being an immigrant coming from to NYC from Europe. We also viewed the park movie, which was very well done. On average 4000 people were cleared each day through the halls of Ellis Island. The main requirement was you must have $25 and not be sick. You were registered, cleared and then you tried to make arrangements to travel to your final destination, or meet a relative. Since, most didn't speak English and the US has a lot of the same name cities in many different states, a lot of them ended up in places they hadn't planned.
From there we went to the Statue of Liberty and took the tour with the park ranger. We did not get in the statue, since you need to make a reservation 2-3 days ahead for that ticket. We didn't know, and probably was just as well since it is the outside that carries the meaning. It was very moving, especially just coming from Ellis Island where Miss Liberty was the sight everyone saw as thet entered the harbor.
We returned to the boat and dressed for dinner. The Liberty House rest. is a minute walk. We had a window table overlooking Manhatten. The food and beverage was probably the best we've had on the trip...and the service matched it. It also seems to be a major reception place for weddings. Can you imagine your wedding pictures with NYC in the background. The only thing missing is the twin towers, which everyone still talks about.
Tomorrow it is off to Manhatten.
